New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that public schools in New York City will close early this week, going against Mayor de Blasio’s previous statements that schools would remain open.
In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, Cuomo said “NYC must have a plan in place in the next 24 hours for childcare for essential workers and a plan to make sure kids will continue to get the meals they need. Axios and the New York Times notes 1.1 million children, 75,000 teachers and over 1 million parents make up the largest public school system in the country.
Following Cuomo’s announcement, Mayor de Blasio released a statement saying schools would stay closed at least through April 20
