Dozens of West Virginia corrections staff and cadets have been fired over a photo in which they made a Nazi salute, The Hill reports.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice reviewed and approved the terminations from the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, according to a statement.
“As I said from the beginning, I condemn the photo of Basic Training Class 18 in the strongest possible terms,” Justice said in the statement. “I also said that this act needed to result in real consequences — terminations and dismissals. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated on my watch in any agency of State government.”
The class photo showed the staff and cadets doing a classic Nazi salute with one arm raised.
The investigation into the photo found that the gesture was used in the classroom within the first two or three weeks of training and was used as a “sign of respect” for the instructor.
