Evacuations Ordered in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Due to Chemical Incident at a Sewage Treatment Plant

Some residents in Martinsburg, West Virginia, have been evacuated from their homes following a chemical incident at a sewage treatment plant, WTTG-TV reports.

City officials have evacuated a half-mile radius around the sewage treatment plant. The incident was prompted by an accidental mixture of sodium hydrochloride and serric chloride, according to officials.

The chemicals have been contained at this time, but evacuations will remain in place until the area is deemed safe.

  1. Two errors in this article – 1.) sodium hydrochloride – no such chemical; it’s sodium hypochlorite & 2.) serric chloride; it’s ferric chloride otherwise known as iron (III) chloride. People who relay information to the public need to fact check before submitting incorrect information.
