Dozens of dogs have been rescued from an allegedly dogfighting ring in Tacoma, Washington, KXLY-TV reports.
A 40-year-old man was arrested following the dogfighting ring bust, with 49 pit bulls being rescued by the animal care workers. Many of the dogs found were malnourished with obvious signs of injury.
Police say that when they went to the man’s residence, he showed them six dogs that were afraid of the owner and multiple had appeared to have given birth to puppies within the past six months.
“Dog fighting is a brutal blood sport that is almost always operated solely for the purpose of conducting illegal gambling,” said Washington State Gambling Commission Director Dave Trujillo. “Thanks to a tip from an alert citizen, we’re able to shut down this criminal operation and rescue dozens of dogs.”
