Michigan Mayor Indicted on Federal Bribery Charges

The mayor of Taylor, Michigan, has been indicted on federal bribery and wire fraud charges, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Taylor Mayor Richard Sollars was indicted Thursday on 7 counts of bribery, one count of conspiring to commit bribery and 18 counts of wire fraud.

Each one of those counts is punishable by prison terms as long as 20 years and by fines of as much as $250,000.

The indictment alleges that Sollars took tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from a real estate developer and stole more than $200,000 from his own campaign fund.

Sollars has pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bond. He has been ordered to stay within the U.S. and to turn over his passport.
