The death toll from the New Zealand volcano eruption has been raised to 6. Eight people are still missing and presumed dead.
It is believed that 47 people were visiting White Island at the time of the eruption just after 2 p.m. on Monday, according to authorities. Five people died at the time of the eruption and a sixth person died from their injuries on Tuesday.
At least another 31 people have been hospitalized, many of them facing critical injuries including extensive burns to their bodies and lungs. Authorities said that due to the extent of the survivors’ injuries, the death toll could continue to rise.
