A patient in the United Kingdom has reportedly been diagnosed with the rare viral disease Monkeypox, BBC News reports.
According to Public Health England, the rare disease was acquired by the patient while they were visiting Nigeria, before flying back to England.
The patient fell ill while in the southwest region of England. They have since been transferred to a specialist infectious disease centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London.
Officials say that they had been implementing “rapid infection control procedures” and have contacted passengers who travelled in close proximity to the patient on the same flight to the U.K.
The infection is usually a self-limiting illness and most people recover within a few weeks, however severe illness can occur in some cases. It does not spread easily between people and the risk to the general public is considered to be very low.
