Last Remaining Mount Rushmore Carver Dies

The last remaining member of the team that carved Mount Rushmore has died at the age of 98, CNN reports.

Don “Nick” Clifford worked on Mount Rushmore from 1938 to 1940, according to his wife, who also announced his death over the weekend.

Clifford was one of hundreds of workers between 1927 and 1941 who used jackhammers and dynamite to carve the 60-foot-tall heads of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln into the side of the mountain.

Clifford’s wife Carolyn says that she is working with Park Rangers to make plans for a memorial service.
