A driver was taken into custody on Thursday after Secret Service agents stopped a suspicious vehicle trying to illegally enter the White House complex, officials said.
The incident happened at an external checkpoint, the Secret Service said. The driver, whose identity has not been made public, tried to tail an official vehicle through the gate.
The Secret Service stopped the vehicle and immediately took the driver into custody, the agency said. D.C. Police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team also responded.
Police searched a black Mercedes-Benz SUV with a Texas license plate. They took out large amounts of clothing and luggage. It was unclear whether anything suspicious was discovered inside the vehicle. Investigators had closed the surrounding roads due to the security alert.
