A former San Diego County Sheriff’s Department captain has been arrested for allegedly participating in a gun trafficking scheme run through a department substation, NBC San Diego reports.
Former captain Marco Garmo was one of five people arrested in connection to the gun trafficking scheme, which officials say was run through the department substation in Rancho San Diego.
Also arrested was SDSO Lt. Fred Magana and prominent San Diego-area jeweler Leo Hamel. Magana and Hamel pleaded guilty to aiding Garmo with the business by purchasing the firearms, creating false records to conceal the purchase and offering to promote the weapons.
Sentencing for those who have plead guilty is scheduled for February.
