A former CIA officer has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for conspiring with Chinese spies, NBC News reports.
Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 55, served 13 years as a CIA case officer in several locations overseas, including China.
Prosecutors say Lee had firsthand knowledge of some of the agency’s most sensitive secrets, including the names of covert officers and human sources in China. His extent of cooperation with the Chinese government is unknown, but the Justice Department says it was “all but certain” that he gave secrets to China.
Federal prosecutors claimed that the Chinese gave Lee a total of $840,000, but the defense countered, saying that the government has never actually linked the deposits to Chinese intelligence officers.
