University of Miami Professor Charged in Federal Drug Trafficking Case

The Justice Department has charged a University of Miami professor with drug trafficking in connection to a Venezuela money laundering scheme, Reuters reports.

U.S. prosecutors have accused Bruce Bagley of receiving $2.5 million from bank accounts in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that were the proceeds of bribery and embezzlement in Venezuela.

The University of Miami has placed Bagley on administrative leave as a result of the accusations.

Last year, Venezuela’s former national treasurer was sentenced to 10 years in prison over allegations he received more than $1 billion in bribes.
