Prominent Florida billionaire philanthropist David Straz Jr. has reportedly died at the age of 77, WFLA-TV reports.
Straz Jr. reportedly died in his sleep during a fishing trip with friends, according to the executive director of his foundation. Family members have asked for privacy from the media and say they will announce final funeral plans.
Straz Jr. ran for the mayoral position in Tampa last year, finishing as runner-up to Jane Castor. He made his wealth through a network of community banks in Florida that he established after moving to Tampa in the 1980s, with the chain eventually growing to 21 branches in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
The Straz family has been major supporters of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, the Lowry Park Zoo, the University of Tampa and many other institutions.
