Bomb Squad Responds to Smoke on Southwest Airlines Flight at Chicago Midway International Airport

Officials say that there were no injuries after a bomb squad was called to reports of smoke on a Southwest flight at Chicago Midway International Airport, WFLD-TV reports.

Fire officials say that the smoke was noticed from an overhead bin as the plane was boarding Monday.

Fire crews located the source of the smoke, a backpack, and then placed it inside of a fire resistant bag until the bomb squad was able to arrive. The cause of the smoke was found to have been a “battery or charging system” inside the bag, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt.

Passengers were returned to the terminal to be boarded onto a new plane.
