Police in Colorado Springs, Colorado, say that dozens of children were found hidden behind a false wall at a daycare owner’s home, CBS Denver reports.
Police made the discovery during a welfare check that was at the behest of the Colorado Department of Human Services.
The department had received complaints that the facility was housing more children in their care than their license allowed, which prompted the investigation. However, police found no children at the facility.
Officers then contacted the owner at their home, but there was no answer. They investigated the home, which is on the same property as the daycare, and heard noise from children coming inside.
“During their investigation, officers found a false wall that led to the home’s basement,” investigators stated. “When officers walked down the stairs, they located two adults and 26 kids inside a finished basement, all of [whom] were under the age of three-years-old.”
Three workers at the day care were arrested for misdemeanor child abuse relating to neglect; however, those charges were canceled by detectives pending further investigation.
