An elementary school teacher from Michigan was found bound, gagged and strangled to death in her apartment in the Dominican Republic, according to local media reports.
Patricia Ann Anton, 63, was found dead in her bed on Tuesday, inside her home in the province of Puerto Plata, Dominican National Police spokesman Frank Felix Duran said. He said that there were signs that she had been tortured. She had worked on the island as a teacher.
Police believe that Anton was murdered during a robbery. Her cellphone, laptop and television were missing. They also found signs that her cupboards had been ransacked.
Police found no signs of forced entry and no suspects have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.
