20-Year-Old College Gymnast Dies Following Freak Training Accident

A Southern Connecticut State University gymnast has reportedly died following a freak training accident in Connecticut.

Melanie Coleman, 20, reportedly died yesterday at Yale New Haven Hospital, two days after suffering a freak spinal injury during practice.

“We are heartbroken and stunned by Melanie’s passing,” head coach Mary Fredericks said. “She was an incredibly hard worker and a sweet-spirited young woman. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to her family at this time. The SCSU Gymnastics team will miss her greatly though she will always be with us.”

Coleman was a junior nursing student at Southern Connecticut State and was a former all-state gymnast at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut.

She was also named a Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association Scholastic All-American earlier this year.
