A Puerto Rican senator is among the eight people arrested in an FBI probe investigating bribery concerning programs that had been receiving federal funds.
The corruption probe led to the arrest of Senator Abel Nazario Quiñones, along with seven others in the U.S. territory. The suspects included former municipal employees who were indicted on one count of alleged theft or bribery involving programs that receive federal funds.
The suspects are accused of using over $5,000 worth of municipal funds to in part pay other suspects to work on Nazario’s campaign. Nazario has refused requests from colleagues to step down and maintains his innocence.
