South Dakota Official Arrested After Breaking Open Records Laws

A South Dakota official has been arrested after they were accused of breaking the state’s open records laws.

Walworth County State’s Attorney James Hare issued an arrest warrant last week for the county’s auditor, Rebecca Krein, after he was notified that she had failed to produce materials at a public meeting. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail.

State officials say that they believe the arrest is the first made since 1965, when South Dakota first criminalized the violation of open-records laws.
