A Dutch family lived isolated on a secluded farm for nine years “waiting for the end of time” until they were discovered this week when one of them escaped to a local bar, police said.
A 58-year-old man and a group of six siblings, ages 18 to 25, was discovered when the eldest of the young adults turned up at a pub. “I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help” the bar owner, Chris Westerbeek, said to local media.
Westerbeek called the police, who were led to a farm where they found the family in a hidden basement. Authorities arrested the 58-year-old man, who isn’t believed to be the father of the young adults, but rents the farm. It’s unclear what happened to their mother. The family appeared to sustain themselves with a vegetable garden and goat on the farm, BBC reported.
