Minor League Baseball Player Dead at Age 27

The Detroit Tigers have announced that Minor Leaguer Chace Numata has died from injuries sustained in a skateboarding accident.

Numata, a member of the Erie SeaWolves, reportedly was skateboarding home in downtown Erie, Michigan, at around 2 a.m. August 30th when he suddenly stopped, possibly striking a rock, and falling on his head. He was found later by a motorist, who noticed him on the side of the road.

Numata was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died Monday.

“Chace was beloved by many from our Major League club through all levels of our player development system,” the Tigers said in a statement Monday. “He had an engaging personality that quickly established him as a leader on and off the field, and his presence will be forever remembered in our organization and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches.”
