A 13-year-old boy with Down syndrome was reportedly raped by a school employee in East Rand, South Africa.
The incident reportedly occurred earlier this month after the boy’s mother had not heard from him and he was not where he normally was when it was time to pick him up from school. Worried, she went into the school, where she was joined by school administrators in looking for the boy.
Eventually the group encountered a worker, who approached them tentatively before asking if they needed anything. They informed him of the missing child, to which he responded that the boy may have fallen asleep inside a classroom. The worker went and unlocked the door to a classroom, and the boy emerged immediately.
The boy’s mother believed something to be wrong later in the day when the boy was not acting normally, and she eventually determined he had been raped after finding blood and semen inside his underwear. Doctors then confirmed her suspicions after taking the boy to a clinic.
The incident was reported to school administrators and police, but no arrests have been made at this time. The worker has been ordered away from the school for the next three months. An investigation is ongoing.
