UPDATE: Da Silva has reportedly been found dead inside of his cell after hanging himself with a sheet, according to the AP. An investigation into his death is ongoing.
A prominent gang leader in Brazil was taken back into custody and is facing discipline after he attempted to escape jail dressed as his daughter.
Clauvino da Silva, also known as “Shorty,” reportedly tried to escape the jail by walking out the front door wearing a silicone mask and dressed similarly to his daughter, who had come to visit him. His plan was apparently to leave his daughter inside the prison while he made his escape.
However, prison guards noticed that he seemed nervous and investigated further, at which point they noticed the mask that da Silva was wearing. Authorities say that da Silva was part of the leadership of the Red Command, one of the most powerful criminal groups in Brazil that controlled drug trafficking in a large part of Rio.
