An Arlington, Texas, police officer fatally shot a woman on Thursday who was lying in the grass as he fired at a running, barking dog near her, the police department said.
The officer who accidentally killed Margarita Brooks, 30, had been dispatched to check on her welfare, according to police. When the officer found Brooks an unrestrained dog was with her, police said. The location was near a fence line and woods behind a shopping center. As the officer called out to the woman, the barking dog ran toward the officer, police said.
He then fired multiple times toward the dog, police said. Brooks screamed, and it was clear that she had been shot. She was taken to Medical City Arlington Hospital and pronounced dead.
