North Carolina Man Dies After Contracting a Brain-Eating Amoeba at a Water Park

A North Carolina man has died after he contracted a brain-eating amoeba at the Hope Mills’ Fantasy Lake water park.

Eddie Gray was reportedly visiting the lake as part of a mission group from Sedge Garden United Methodist Church in Kernersville. He later died this week from complications related to Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba (one-celled living organism) commonly found in warm freshwater.

Naegleria fowleri, referred to as the brain-eating amoeba, does not cause illness if swallowed but can be fatal if forced up the nose, as can occur during diving or other similar water activities. Cumberland County officials reportedly told Fantasy Lake to put up signs alerting the public to use precautions while swimming, but they did not demand that the water park be closed.
