Former Texas Police Chief Convicted in Drug Trafficking Case

Former La Joya, Texas, police chief Geovani Hernandez has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking.

45-year-old Geovani V. Hernandez had been in law enforcement for nearly two decades. He was originally convicted of numerous drug charges in March, but was not sentenced until this week.

Hernandez was a Progreso police sergeant when federal agents arrested him in 2017. He had reportedly accepted cash from a federal informant to provide security for a drug cartel associate and a shipment of cocaine. If he had chosen to plead guilty, he could have reduced his sentencing by seven years.
