Italian police say that they have seized an “arsenal” of weapons and Nazi paraphernalia from a group of three men.
Fabio Del Bergiolo, who ran for the Italian Senate in 2001 as a candidate for the Forza Nuova party, Swiss citizen Alessandro Monti, and Fabio Bernardi were arrested on Monday in connection with the stockpile. Monti, 42, and Bernardi, 51, were arrested for allegedly possessing and trying to selling a French-made Matra air-to-air missile.
Bergiolo, 60, was arrested for allegedly serving as a middleman to sell weapons. The stockpile was discovered during an investigation by Italian police into Italians “with extremist ideology” who had fought alongside Russian-backed separatist forces in Donbass, eastern Ukraine, last July.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the men were able to bring the air-to-air missile to the country. It appears to have previously belonged to Qatari forces.
