Sailors Killed After Fire Breaks Out on Nuclear Submarine

Fourteen sailors died when a fire erupted on a Russian navy nuclear submarine conducting a survey of the sea floor in the country’s waters, officials said.

The Losharik, an AS-12 deep-sea nuclear mini-sub, was carrying out a military survey when the fire broke out Monday night, according to the Moscow Times.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the blaze was extinguished thanks to the self-sacrifice of the crew aboard the sub, which is now at the Arctic port of Severomorsk on the Barents Sea.
