Alabama Megachurch Expected to Form its Own Police Force

An Alabama megachurch will reportedly be forming its own police force after passage of a controversial law allowing it to do so.

The bill, which was signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey, authorizes Briarwood Presbyterian to “appoint and employ one or more suitable persons to act as police officers to protect the property of the school or academy.” Officials at Briarwood Presbyterian Church have stated that a police force is necessary in order to protect its 4,100 members, including 2,000 students and faculty on its two campuses.

Critics of the move say that the police force would allow the church to selectively enforce laws and also cites the church’s past links to white supremacist groups. The ACLU of Alabama tweeted the new law undermines the separation of church and state are is “a threat to our freedom of religion and a violation of the Establishment Clause.”
