A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has struck in the Kermadec Islands region in the Pacific Ocean. Civil Defence in New Zealand was working to see whether the earthquake posed a tsunami threat to New Zealand.
If a tsunami was generated it was not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least two hours, Civil Defence said. The quake struck just after 11 a.m. Sunday, NZ time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, said a tsunami threat existed for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake.
