Federal Elections Commission Chair Ellen Weintraub said Thursday that it is illegal to accept foreign interference during elections.
The comments come after President Trump publicly suggested he would accept foreign intel on opponents. In a statement with the accompanying tweet “I would not have thought that I needed to say this,” Weintraub stated the following:
“Let me make something 100 percent clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election.”
The statement appears to be a response to President Trump’s comments made during an interview with ABC News where he suggested that he would accept dirt on an opponent offered by a foreign country.
