Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz had his gallbladder and part of his intestine removed after he was shot in the back at a bar in the Dominican Republic, NBC News reports.
Ortiz underwent surgery on Sunday after he was shot by a gunman at close range. “The bullet exited through Ortiz’s stomach and hit television host Jhoel Lopez, who was at the bar with Ortiz,” according to the report.
Beyond the removal of the gallbladder and part of the intestine, Ortiz’s liver was also damaged, according to his spokesman.
Ortiz will now be flown to Boston to continue his treatment.
As of mid-day Monday, he is said to be stable.
