Prominent Investigative Journalist Arrested in Russia

A prominent Russian investigative journalist has reportedly been arrested in Moscow, Russia.

Ivan Golunov, a columnist for the independent Russian media network Meduza, was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with possession of mephedrone. Meduza director general Galina Timchenko reportedly told AP that while in police custody, Golunov showed signs of having been beaten.

Several other Russian and international journalists have criticized the arrest, as has Amnesty International, who say that “Everything indicates that the authorities are planting drugs on their targets to shut them up with a jail sentence,” according to their Russian office director Nataliya Zviagina.
