Mitch McConnell Says He Would Fill a Supreme Court Vacancy if it Occurs During Next Year’s Presidential Election

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says that he would fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2020, if one were to arise.

This comes as a reversal from his policy during the 2016 election, where he refused to confirm President Obama’s nominee, citing the right of the voters in the presidential election to decide whether a Democrat or a Republican would fill that opening.

David Popp, a spokesman for McConnell, said that the main difference between now and three years ago, when McConnell famously blocked Judge Merrick Garland’s appointment to the Supreme Court, is that at that time, the White House was controlled by Democrat and the Senate by a Republican.
