U.S. officials say that the Pentagon is sending a plan to the White House that would send up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East.
No decision has been made on the deployment and the White House has not commented on the plans. Officials say the troops will be defensive forces, and the discussions include additional Patriot missile batteries and more ships.
The proposed plan comes amid heightening tension with Iran. Defense officials told congressional officials Tuesday that the U.S. does not want to go to war with Iran and will seek to de-escalate the situation.
