Seven children were killed in a landmine explosion that also wounded two others in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, officials said.
The landmine went off in Ghazni province, south of Kabul. The children stepped on the landmine while playing near a road, spokesman Aref Noori told AFP. “The mine was planted by the Taliban on the main road to inflict casualties on security forces,” he said.
Roadside bombs and landmines are often used to kill Afghan security forces, but civilians are often the victims. The children were said to be between 7 and 9-years-old and at least four were from one family.
