A Nashville Air Force veteran has been charged with disclosing classified national defense information to a reporter.
The Department of Justice announced the charges on Thursday morning against 31-year-old Daniel Everette Hale. Hale also worked with the NSA as an intelligence analyst in Afghanistan. He is accused of speaking with a reporter on multiple occasions and using an encrypted messaging platform to communicate.
According to the indictment, Hale was leaking information on drones and counterintelligence information. He has has been charged with obtaining national defense information, retention, and transmission of national defense information, causing the communication of national defense information, disclosure of classified communications intelligence information, and theft of government property. If convicted, Hale faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each charge.
