Speculation Raised That Russia May Be Using Whales for Military Purposes

Officials and experts have raised speculations over whether Russia is using Beluga whales for military purposes after Norwegian officials found one of the animals with a harness.

Fishermen in Arctic Norway last week reported that they found a tame white cetacean with a tight harness swimming around. Since finding the animal, experts and officials have raised questions over the harness, with Audun Rikardsen, a professor at the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology at the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsoe, northern Norway, believing that “it is most likely that Russian Navy in Murmansk” is involved.

Rikardsen and his colleagues say that Russia has never been known to use the creatures for their military, but did confirm that the Soviet Union had a dolphin-training program.
