The FBI alleges that the suspected leader of a New Mexico militia that has detained migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border “boasted” of plans to assassinate President Barack Obama, according to BBC News.
In the new FBI allegations, it is alleged that Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who was arrested on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, was training and plotting to kill Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and billionaire Democratic donor George Soros.
Hopkins’ lawyer claims that the allegations are “categorically false … there was no plan to do any of that.”
The armed group, the United Constitutional Patriots, posted viral video in recent weeks of it detaining hundreds of migrants who had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, many seeking asylum.
PayPal and GoFundMe in recent days had banned the group from seeking donations on their platform.
Hopkins faces up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the current charges, which come following a 1996 conviction to possessing a loaded firearm, and a 2006 conviction for possessing a weapon and impersonating a police officer in Oregon.
