Lyra McKee, a 29-year-old journalist based in Belfast, Ireland, has been killed in a shooting during riots in northern Ireland, according to media reports and police.
Police are calling the incident, which occurred on Thursday night in Londonberry, a “terrorist incident.”
According to BuzzFeed News, “her work included examining the fallout of decades of violence in Northern Ireland, and she was described as a rising star of investigative journalism in an announcement of a publishing deal last year.”
During the riots, masked attackers were seen throwing Molotov cocktail fireworks and other debris at police vehicles.
BuzzFeed reports that “a journalist at the scene said she was standing next to the woman when she was struck by gunfire.”
According to Sky News, “police Service of Northern Ireland says it believes the attack was carried out by “violent dissident republicans” adding “the New IRA is most likely to be behind this and that forms the primary line of inquiry”
