The Environmental Protection Agency has announced a nearly complete ban on asbestos manufacturing and imports.
The new rule will close former loopholes that allowed for usage of the substance in industrial processes or included in certain products. The EPA says that the fix will ensure that asbestos would not enter the marketplace without their awareness.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring substance that is mined and prized for its string-like fibers. It has been linked to mesothelioma, which causes about 3,000 deaths annually, according to 2017 CDC data.
