One person was killed and 17 others were transported to the hospital after an explosion in downtown Durham, North Carolina, Wednesday morning.
The explosion occurred after a construction worker boring under the sidewalk hit a 2-inch gas line. This created a gas leak, which was reported to officials. Around half an hour after the initial leak was reported and first responders arrived, an explosion occurred, leveling much of the city block.
Among the injured was one firefighter, who sustained serious injuries. At least seven others remain in critical condition. Many businesses in the area remain evacuated as crews clear the area of debris.
