Senator Michael Bennet (D-Co) has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to a statement. Bennet, who has served in the United States Senate since 2009, will undergo surgery.
The statement from a spokesperson said that the disease is in its early stages and that the prognosis for the 54-year-old senator is good.
Bennet says that he was diagnosed last month, but that he still plans to run for president in 2020 if he is cancer-free.
The diagnosis came as he underwent a physical prior to announcing a presidential run.
