BREAKING: Algerian Leader to Resign

Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the 82-year-old leader of Algeria, will step down by the end of April, according to Algerian state media.

Bouteflika, who has not been seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013, announced plans to run for re-election, but changed his mind following a serious of protests in Algeria.

As part of Monday’s announcement, Bouteflika’s office said he would take “important steps to ensure the continuity of the functioning of state institutions” during the transition period.

He has been in the office of the presidency since 1999.
