California to Waive Environmental Rules in Preparation for Fire Season

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state is waiving environmental rules in order to prepare for fire season.

In doing so, Newsom is taking recommendations from the California Department of Forestry, although the move has come under criticism from environmental groups, who say that the state was ignoring their role as a national environmental leader.

The waiver will allow for dead trees to be cleared out at a quicker pace, hopefully clearing away some fuel for the fires. Environmental groups have instead suggested that the state focus on clearing space around homes, criticizing the clearing of tree and saying that it could lead to loose soil, increasing the threat of mudslides.
