Inquiry Launched After Court Reportedly Overturned Rape Conviction Because the Victim was Too Ugly to Have Been Raped

Italy’s Justice Ministry has launched an inquiry into a case after a rape conviction was overturned.

The inquiry was launched after public outage surrounding the case, which had been decided by an appeals courts in 2017. It had returned to public light March 5th after Italy’s high court ordered a retrial in the case.

Two Peruvian men were convicted of raping a Peruvian woman in 2015, but the appeal in 2017 led to their conviction being overturned, in part, because the victim was determined to have not been attractive enough to have been raped.
