BREAKING: Rescue Operation Underway for Dozens Stranded on frozen Lake Erie

First responders are working to rescue dozens of people stuck out on the ice over Lake Erie off of Catawba Island State Park.

Several dozen people became stranded while out on the ice to fish on Saturday morning when a large area of water cut them off from land around 8 a.m. One witness said people began “freaking out” when the opening in the ice began growing and said that some jumped in the water and swam across to reach the solid ice still connected to the mainland. According to an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher, no injuries or hospitalizations have been reported as of 10 a.m. Saturday.

As of 10 a.m., rescuers reported that everyone had been rescued from the ice.
