Over 1,500 live turtles have been found duct-taped inside suitcases at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines.

The turtles had a total value of around $87,000 and were likely being brought to be sold. The turtles were found in four unclaimed suitcases after being smuggled onto a flight from Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, penalties for the smuggling of endangered species are very severe, with a maximum fine of $1.3 million and 10 years in jail, with the Philippines having similar restrictions.
