Florida Legislator Apologizes After Calling Pregnant Women “Host Bodies”

Florida House Speaker José Oliva has issued an apology after he referred to pregnant women as “host bodies” in an interview on abortion.

Oliva apologized for the statement, saying that it was “an attempt to use terminology found in medical ethics writings with the purpose of keeping the discussion dispassionate. The reaction undoubtedly shows it had the exact opposite effect.” During the interview, which aired on CBS Miami’s Facing South Florida, used the term multiple times.

Multiple bills have been filed in the Florida legislature that would restrict abortions substantially.
