George Mendonsa, the Navy sailor pictured kissing a nurse in the iconic World War II photo at the end of the war has died at the age of 95.
Mendonsa reportedly died of congestive heart failure at an assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island. Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured the iconic moment between Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman on April 14, 1945, after Japan announced their surrender.
The photo was published in Life magazine, quickly becoming one of the most memorable captures from the war. Friedman died in 2016 at the age of 92.
